The long-awaited construction of the new roundabout at the intersection of Tin Can Bay Road and Bayside Road has now been finalised, bringing with it noticeable improvements in traffic flow and driver visibility.
This upgrade was designed with safety as the top priority, with the hope that it will significantly reduce the number of accidents that have previously occurred at this busy intersection. Local residents and authorities alike share the common goal of preventing serious injuries or fatalities before they happen.
LNP Member for Gympie, Mr Tony Perrett, has welcomed the completion of the new Tin Can Bay roundabout, noting its importance in improving both safety and traffic flow for locals and visitors alike. Speaking on the project, Mr Perrett said:
The intersection of Bayside Road and Tin Can Bay Road had long been a concern for the community and visitors to the Gympie region, due to the number of serious accidents and near misses.
“I’m pleased that, after years of advocacy, the new roundabout at the Bayside Road and Tin Can Bay Road intersection has finally been completed – delivering the safety improvements our coastal communities have been calling for over many years.”
Mr Perrett also once again praised Mrs Debra Mason for her efforts in securing nearly 900 signatures in 2023 for a petition he sponsored, calling on the government to urgently upgrade the intersection.
Early feedback from road users suggests that traffic is moving more smoothly and with greater predictability through the intersection. However, correct use of the roundabout is essential to ensure these safety improvements are realised.
The Bulletin has received requests from several community members to publish information on how to correctly use the roundabout — particularly regarding indicator use, which plays a key role in letting other motorists know your intended direction of travel and exit point.
To support this, the following diagrams (sourced directly from the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads) outline the proper procedures for navigating a roundabout. Motorists are reminded that correct signalling is not only courteous but also a legal requirement designed to keep all road users safe.
For further information about roundabout rules — or any Queensland road rules — please visit www.tmr.qld.gov.au or telephone 13 23 80.
Together, by practicing safe driving habits and using the roundabout correctly, we can ensure that this much-needed upgrade continues to improve safety and help protect lives on our roads.
