New year, new start. The popular Tin Can Bay Ferry’s got itself a new owner at the start of 2024, and with the warmer weather coming on new proprietor Andrew Angus wants to let everyone know about the services he offers.
In Tin Can Bay we are blessed with some of the most beautiful waterways in the country, and what better way to see them but aboard an historic ferry. Tin Can Bay Ferry offers an on demand service (minimum passengers required) between Rainbow Beach, Carlo Point and Norman Point.
Coming from a background in civil construction, owner Andrew cut his teeth on the water while growing up in Scarborough a northern beachside suburb of Brisbane. He began sailing in the 1980’s and has competed a number of times, in the Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race. One of Andrew’s fondest memories was sailing to and around South East Asia.
Andrew has a strong family connection with the water as many of his ancestors were fisherman and boat builders, in fact his great uncle Augustine Dux was the first commercial fisherman on the Broadwater located at the Gold Coast. Dux’s Creek on Bribie Island is named after Andrew’s great grandfather.
After deciding to make Tin Can Bay their permanent home in September 2022, Andrew continued to travel between Brisbane, Melbourne and Canberra for work. When he was offered a new posting in Katherine in late 2023, he made the decision that the travel was getting too much and he wanted to try something else.
As luck would have it Tin Can Bay Ferry/Dolphin Cruises was on the market for sale. With his knowledge of boating and his passion for the water it was an easy choice that this would be Andrew’s next journey.
Currently, the Tin Can Bay Ferry is offering the following cruises, Morning Sight Seeing Cruise, a stunning one hour cruise taking in the scenic waterways of the Great Sandy Strait, Sunset Cruise, 90 minutes of relaxing cruising out on the water where you get to sit back with your BYO drinks and nibbles and watch the sun set on the bay.
You can also book a lunch cruise for most days where you get picked up at the dock in Tin Can Bay and taken to one of the area’s participating local restaurants in Rainbow Beach.
Group charter bookings are also available, Andrew and his crew will organise a personal cruise for your family or work function, a great way for organisations celebrating Christmas or corporate events to get together and relax.
Passengers can bring their own food and drinks on board and Andrew has a few Eskies to keep things cool. A complimentary chilled bottle of water is available to all passengers. All cruises and bookings are subject to weather permitting and bookings numbers.
“Unfortunately I have to have a minimum of six passengers” said Andrew. “Believe me, if I didn’t have mooring fees, insurance, fuel costs and fees for National Park permits that I have to cover, I would be out on these pristine waters every chance I got, just to show it off”, laughed Andrew. Andrew says the best part of his job is sharing the region with visitors and locals of course
Do yourself a favour, jump on board a Tin Can Bay Ferry Cruise and enjoy what your beautiful region looks like from the water.
